Mastery is something one never stops pursuing. It exists in a constant state of flux and is based on your own life style. Today I'm going to share with you my process of playing Dead or Alive. I'm currently ranked 108 on the worldwide leaderboard in survival mode solo match (legend difficulty) on xbl in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate.
I've played the DOA series for more than a decade and by no means am I the best, but the strategy I employ in this game will elevate your skills in any fighting game."And so we begin".

Training mode is your best friend. You a can only play the way you practice, so practice, practice, practice. This can not be stressed enough. Before I do anything I do the command training with whatever character I'm using. Not so much for muscle memory, but for keeping their tools fresh in my mind. You never know when a move can inspire a new combo. Once I've finished command training I enter free training to practice my bread and butter combos and set ups on static and live opponents. ( Every single time I play!!!) This alone make you better than most because of your level of execution and muscle memory. YouTube is your greatest resource for combos and set ups.
I generally will take a combo, or the concept behind it and apply it to my style of play. Mastering high damage output combos will set you apart from most of the crowd because every time you touch your opponent you'll inflict the most possible damage which is another way to grow in your skills.

After you've practiced and are feeling confident test your skills in lobbies and ranked matches. Don't just play to win, play to learn. You have to learn from every loss you take. It may be frustrating, but remain objective and apply what you've learn in your practice sessions. I personally turn the minimum rank up as I progress in rank, so I'll encounter greater opposition, but to each his own.

Survival Mode
Playing survival mode is one of my favorite ways to test my skills. Challenge and rank withstanding survival mode will build up your " Wong Factor" and help you make come backs that you wouldn't believe.

Using Other Characters
The most important tool in your arsenal is character knowledge. Start with the characters that give you the most trouble, and work your way through the entire roster. By following the process listed above you will learn the strengths and weaknesses of the games cast. This twice as important in DOA because of the counter hold mechanic. Knowing how to counter every character in the game will greatly tip the scales of victory in your favor.

Ending Note
Watching streams with top players is also a good form of researching and developing your skills. Practice and play open mindedly. Your steadfast will determine your results.
